What Does BTB Do And What Is The Referral Process

What Does Bespoke Treatment Barbados (BTB) Do?

BTB provides discreet one to one mental health and wellbeing treatment utilising nature-based and nature-informed therapy and traditional psychotherapy in a Caribbean setting.

Our services cater for those struggling with a range of issues such as:

Stress           Anxiety            Burn-Out           Trauma           Depression           Relationship Problems

Low Self-Esteem        Menopause       Grief         Executive Dysfunction       Feeling Lost In Life

How Do We Do IT?

Many treatment services based their therapy inside. The therapy room is private, sterile, and can offer a sense of safety and containment. But this doesn’t work for everyone. Some of those who would benefit from therapy choose not to pursue it because the encounter feels too claustrophobic, uncomfortable and exposing – like being under a microscope. For these individuals, the thought of sitting across from a therapist in an enclosed space is too intimidating, pressurised and institutionalised. Others have tried it and found it lacking for them but unsure why.

Psychologist, Erich Fromm, first used the word biophilia in 1964 but it was American biologist Edward O Wilson in the 80s that proposed that humans have an innate need to connect with the natural world, even when it has been stripped away by our addiction to technology and urbanisation. One possibility is that this deep-rooted appeal means that outdoor therapy provides a special form of connection, safety and predictability - this is certainly something that BTB holds dear. Nature therefore possesses a unique power to break down barriers, liberate people and free up alternative perspectives and is the cornerstone of how BTB works with clients.

Who Does What?

BTB is a team of highly qualified, experienced professionals including psychiatrists, general practitioners, psychologists, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, nature informed therapists, nutritionists and other health and well-being professionals. Over 90% of the staff team are Island based with years of experience withing their own fields, many of whom also lecture both on the Island, in the US and elsewhere.

The Process Of Admission And Treatment

The First Stage in the admission process is always a brief chat with the client followed by a free initial assessment.

The initial assessment forms an integral part of client care.  It provides information that is critical to deciding whether BTB might be the right treatment service and if it is it informs the development of a plan of action of an individualised treatment plan. Suitability always takes place via a multidisciplinary discussion with the clinical leads.

The Second Stage is a further discussion for the prospective client with one of the clinical leads and the subsequent drawing up of a bespoke treatment plan and schedule for the client to review and sign up to. The treatment plan and schedule are important documents as they form the blueprints of what the client wants to achieve and how BTB is going to go about facilitating this.

The Third Stage is treatment delivery against the agreed schedule. A lot of time and energy goes into the creation of the tailored treatment plan and schedule which is put together using the experience of BTB’s highly qualified staff team. Although treatment is delivered in Barbados and utilising nature-based therapy, activities and traditional psychotherapy BTB’s treatment is not a spa however it utilises the Islands natural resources and the skills of the staff to enhance and accelerates a client’s mental health and well-being. Progress is reviewed regularly against the goals set and any adjustments to the treatment plan and schedule are made accordingly.

The Forth Stage is all about continuing care (aftercare). One of the reasons that continuing treatment via aftercare is essential is because the longstanding issues that clients present with often alter the normal functioning of the brain. Some of these changes do not instantly reverse once the behaviour ends. Aftercare is vital to ensure that our clients continue their positive mental health and wellbeing journey after returning home. For this reason, we provide tailor-made aftercare programmes for all our clients.

Other Professionals

In many cases, clients come to BTB through involvement with another professional, this may be a therapist or even a psychiatrist. Subject to client’s consent, BTB always keeps the referring professional involved in the progress of their client and equally importantly as a key component of their continuing care.

Community Spirit

BTB is a keen supporter of local communities, and we are keen to put something back where we can, so we are privileged to support Sandy Turf Stables in this area as part of our nature focussed treatment programme. A few of the horses are home bred but a large number are rescues as well as adoptees from the local polo stables and racetrack where they can be “retired” to Sandra and a different life. Outside of the riding experiences Sandra offers for individuals with special needs, and for those that don’t, she also uses the stables for community services opportunities to the underprivileged youth in Barbados and runs programmes for those wanting to work in the horse industry, be that exercise riders, grooms etc. These individuals also help with the special needs children as well as supporting the beach rides, which includes going into the sea with the horses when the ride is completed.
