Trauma
Understanding Trauma: Healing What the Body Remembers.
Trauma is not just something that happens to us, it’s something that lives inside us. It can change the way we think, feel, and interact with the world. Even long after the event has passed, trauma can continue to shape our daily lives, often in ways we don’t fully understand.
At BTB, we help individuals, couples, and families uncover, process, and heal from trauma with deep care, absolute privacy, and world-class therapeutic support – one client at a time.
What Is Trauma?
Psychologically, trauma is the emotional and mental response to an experience that overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. It could be a single event, like an accident, loss, or assault, or it could be a series of experiences over time, such as neglect, betrayal, or chronic stress.
Biologically, trauma affects the nervous system. When trauma occurs, the body’s fight, flight, or freeze response is activated. For many, the nervous system gets stuck in this survival mode, even long after the danger has passed. This can lead to long-term changes in brain function, hormone regulation, and how we perceive safety, connection, and control.
Trauma can be especially complex and difficult to navigate for high-profile individuals, industry leaders, and those in the creative fields. Whether the trauma is personal, relational, or rooted in early experiences, its impact often collides with the demands of public life and performance. For CEOs and public figures, the need to remain composed and in control can make it difficult to acknowledge or process traumatic experiences, especially when vulnerability is perceived as a liability. In the creative industries, such as music, film, and acting—trauma may even fuel artistic expression, but it can also lead to emotional dysregulation, burnout, and unhealthy coping mechanisms behind the scenes. Constant exposure, pressure, and lack of privacy can further entrench trauma responses, while support systems may be limited or superficial. At BTB, we offer a discreet and deeply supportive space where trauma can be safely explored and healed away from public scrutiny and with the full focus of a trauma-informed, integrative team.
When Trauma Becomes a Problem
Not everyone who experiences trauma will develop lasting difficulties. But for many, unprocessed trauma becomes embedded in the body and mind, leading to ongoing emotional, physical, and relational challenges.
When trauma remains unresolved, it can:
- Affect mood, memory, and self-esteem
- Trigger emotional reactivity or numbness
- Disrupt sleep, digestion, or energy levels
- Undermine trust and connection in relationships
- Lead to anxiety, depression, addiction, or burnout
You may not always remember the traumatic experience clearly—but your body does
Signs and Symptoms of Unresolved Trauma
- Hypervigilance or a constant sense of being on edge
- Difficulty relaxing, sleeping, or feeling safe
- Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares
- Emotional numbness, dissociation, or feeling disconnected
- Avoidance of people, places, or memories
- Irritability, anger outbursts, or emotional overwhelm
- Difficulty trusting others or forming healthy relationships
- Feelings of shame, guilt, or helplessness
Sometimes, trauma looks like overachievement, perfectionism, or people-pleasing. Sometimes, it looks like isolation or emotional shutdown. It affects everyone differently but it always deserves care.
