Depression
Understanding Depression: Finding Light in the Darkness.
Depression is more than feeling sad, it’s a serious, often misunderstood mental health condition that can affect how you think, feel, and function. It can leave even the most successful, creative, or outwardly composed individuals feeling hopeless, exhausted, or disconnected from themselves and the world around them.
At BTB, we provide focused, personalized, and compassionate treatment for depression in a private sanctuary, working with only one individual, couple, or family at a time to create the safety, clarity, and space needed for real, lasting healing.
Depression can be especially challenging for high-profile individuals and leaders because it often conflicts with the external image they are expected to uphold. Public figures, CEOs, and industry leaders are seen as strong, driven, and resilient, yet depression can bring a profound sense of emptiness, fatigue, and disconnection that feels at odds with those roles. The internal experience of hopelessness or numbness can be intensified by isolation, as those in the spotlight may feel unable to share their struggle without fear of judgment, exposure, or reputational risk. This is especially true in the creative industries, such as music, acting, and the arts, where emotional vulnerability is central to the craft, yet often unsupported behind the scenes. The pressure to perform, create, and stay relevant can amplify depressive symptoms, especially when public success masks private suffering. At BTB, we understand the unique pressures of life in the public eye and provide a safe, confidential space for clients to step away from external expectations and receive deeply personalized, compassionate care.
What Is Depression?
Psychologically, depression is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or numbness, often accompanied by a loss of interest in activities that once brought joy. It can affect self-worth, relationships, work, and physical health.
Biologically, depression is linked to changes in brain chemistry and structure. It often involves imbalances in neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine chemicals that regulate mood, motivation, and energy. Stress hormones like cortisol may also be elevated, leading to fatigue, sleep disruption, and immune system suppression.
Why Do We Experience Depression?
Depression doesn’t have one single cause. It often arises from a combination of factors, including:
- Genetics or family history
- Unresolved trauma or chronic stress
- Life changes, grief, or loss
- Burnout or overwork
- Relationship difficulties or isolation
- Substance misuse
- Long-term medical conditions or hormonal imbalances
It can affect anyone, regardless of background, wealth, gender, age, or success. Many high-achievers, creatives, and public figures silently experience depression while continuing to perform, hiding their pain behind achievement or public image.

When Depression Becomes a Problem
While it’s normal to experience sadness or low energy at times, depression becomes a problem when:
- Symptoms last for more than two weeks
- It impacts your ability to function at work or in relationships
- You feel overwhelmed, hopeless, or emotionally flat
- Motivation disappears, even for things you once enjoyed
- There are thoughts of self-harm or suicide
Untreated depression can worsen over time and increase the risk of physical illness, substance use, and relational breakdown. But it is treatable, with the right support, it does get better.
